Potters Music Shop was a real place, and typical of its kind. In the early sixties in the suburbs of London or Liverpool, shops like this were the only access a fledgling group had to the latest Beatles release and guitars, amps, sheet music. Everything in this painting is accurate — the album covers, the sheet music, the instruments.

The Epiphone guitar the main bod is trying out would probably have been out of his price range. The other one, in his knock‑off Beatles suit, would have had to make a trip to Carnaby Street to get that look —same goes for their Cuban‑heeled boots.

The girlfriend, on the other hand, definitely bought those dazzlers at Dolcis. I know all this as Potters was my access, on the wall is a Futura II, the red fake Stratocaster— mine. — the worst guitar ever made.  The only inaccuracy is Potter himself. He’d have been beaming, as always.
