Gary Windo was a saxophonist and my neighbor when I lived in Woodstock. I'd moved from the city to find peace and quiet — only to find Pam Windo and the Shades lived next door.

 

Before Photoshop existed, we had to make images the old-fashioned way. With a title like Deep Water, we had to find some water. Close by was Todd Rundgren's pool, so we submerged Gary and photographed him. Later I painted directly onto the photographs by hand.
